Across the United Kingdom, 53% of heroin users secure professional treatment for addictions via private and NHS rehabs each year. [1]

Though completing a treatment programme in rehab is essential, in some instances, additional support and help is required to ensure that individuals affected by heroin addictions can maintain their recovery.

To ensure that additional support can be acquired, many charities host heroin support groups. These support groups can be attended by individuals recovering from heroin addictions and those affected by someone else’s addiction.

At Addiction Advocates, we have provided insight into the different types of support groups and shared several of the heroin support groups that are available below.

Heroin Support Groups

Heroin support groups continue to provide a safe space for individuals recovering from heroin addiction to share their concerns and obtain immediate help as and when needed.

Often the first port of call for many, heroin support groups in the United Kingdom includes SMART Recovery and Narcotics Anonymous.

SMART Recovery [2]

Supporting individuals as they address and recover from their heroin addiction, SMART Recovery hosts recovery meetings and support groups in various locations across the United Kingdom.

SMART meetings typically last for 90 minutes and can be attended weekly. Meetings help attendees build and maintain recovery motivation and ensure that urges and triggers can be managed.

Individuals that attend SMART meetings also have access to cognitive behavioural therapy and motivational interviewing. These therapies are among the most successful when considering heroin addiction treatment and aftercare.

To find a SMART Recovery support group, visit the SMART Recovery website here.Support Groups

Narcotics Anonymous

Narcotics Anonymous hosts in-person and online heroin support groups that last for 90 minutes. These particular meetings ensure that individuals struggling and recovering from several drug addictions can obtain additional help as they look to maintain their recovery.

To ensure that those in attendance can secure the support they need, heroin support groups provided by Narcotics Anonymous only cater to up to 30 people at any given time. As a result, locating and booking a place is recommended.

Face-to-face meetings can be found via the Narcotics Anonymous website here. Alternatively, online meetings can be attended at 11 am and 7.30 pm here.

Family and Friend Heroin Support Groups

While those struggling with heroin addictions will, of course, feel the most significant impact of their addiction, heroin addictions impair the lives of family members, friends and even employers.

Family and friend support groups have also been set up to ensure that those affected by someone else’s addiction can seek support, guidance, and reassurance.

Below, we have outlined a few heroin support groups available for those affected by heroin addictions.

Adfam [3]

Understanding the impact that heroin addictions can have on relationships, Adfam provides heroin support groups to family members and friends that find themselves struggling to cope with the ramifications of a loved one’s addiction.

Attending Adfam support groups enable many individuals to understand heroin addictions in greater detail. The support groups hosted also provide a space for those affected by addiction to navigate any feelings they may have encountered and ensure that they are free from harm.

Adfam heroin support groups are available to attend in-person and online. To locate a support group, visit the Adfam website here.

DrugFAM [4]

A charity set up to support families, DrugFAM hosts free of charge heroin support groups in the Southeast of England.

In addition to running heroin support groups, DrugFam offers one-to-one support via email, telephone, Zoom and private appointments.

To locate a heroin support group, visit the DrugFAM website here. To arrange one-to-one support, call 0300 888 3853.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens At A Heroin Support Group?
Individuals that attend a heroin support group are encouraged to discuss how heroin has impacted their life. However, rather than reflecting on the past, many support groups advocate looking to the future. In some instances, individuals who attend heroin support groups may not be ready to share their experiences with others. Yet, attending a heroin support group will enable them to understand how heroin has affected others. Heroin support groups also supply a wealth of support, guidance, and inspiration to many.
What Are The Benefits Of Attending Heroin Support Groups?
There are various benefits of attending heroin support groups. These include meeting others who are also in recovery, maintaining sobriety and celebrating recovery milestones. While attending heroin support groups are extremely beneficial, if treatment is yet to be sought for a heroin addiction, rehab must firstly be attended. This is because heroin support groups cannot supply the treatments required to overcome the physical and psychological effects of addiction.
What Treatment Is Available For Heroin Addictions?
Heroin detox and heroin rehab are among the commonly administered heroin addiction treatments. Completing a heroin detox ensures that toxins can be eliminated from the brain and body. In contrast, heroin rehab helps those struggling with addiction understand the cause of the addiction and develop coping strategies that minimise the risk of relapse through the employment of psychological and well-being therapies.

Really enjoyed my time at Asana lodge. Staff are great and most have previous experience of the afflictions that affect all the clients, so they can relate to the situation you are in. I feel ready now to tackle the outside world with all the skills I have learnt.
